I know all our guys at Dreamwave Events are at the top of their game and highly skilled DJ’s – but do you know how to clock a skilled DJ? How do you know the DJ you have booked is the person who will bring a fantastic evening party? I have put together a few tips to help you choose the right DJ and spot the techniques that make the so good at what they do……
Skilled DJ’s will Read the Dance floor
First of all, not one person wants their dance floor empty at their party. A skilled DJ will assess their audience and play music that works for them and keep their dancing shoes alight! A wedding DJ needs to be particularly good at this as the guests at a wedding tend to be mixed ages that will generally want certain era’s and genres of music to get them moving! A skilled DJ will also be aware of cultural backgrounds of the wedding party and would have prepared music especially for the evening.
Keeping the dance floor full is definitely what I would want from a DJ – after all, a party is’t a party without a good boogie!
Skilled DJ’s have the Ability to get back the Crowd
Secondly, should your DJ happen to try a song that doesn’t work (and it happens to the best of them); the dancers will surely disperse! It will be well within a skilled DJ’s capabilities to switch to a song that will re-captivate the crowd quickly. This is much more difficult than it sounds – keeping their cool whilst realising their error combined with hasty thinking to re-gather the group.
A DJ can earn their stripes by showing their skills off by seamlessly synchronising the tempos of two songs. A skilled DJ adjust pitch and time and then make beats of the two well chosen songs hit at the same time and enables a smooth transition between them. If not done properly the beats will fall out of sync that will result in an oh so obvious blip in performance…and yes the dancers will notice!
I just touched on this in beat-matching. A skilled DJ can adjust the length and pitch of a song that there is a seamless transition between two tunes without affecting the quality of their performance.
Skilled DJ’s will give an Energetic Performance
Indeed, a DJ indisputably needs a technical edge and knowledge of music, but there ultimately is something you cant teach – how to be energised and engaged with the crowd. A fantastic DJ will visibly be enjoying their performance. They will be completely committed to the party and be animated on the platform of their DJ Set.
Experienced, Skilled DJ’s will have a great Music Repertoire
Yeah, OK, so I included this one even thought it’s pretty obvious. Having an awesome range of music knowledge has to be a must for every skilled DJ. I think a DJ that has this, shows fluidity and more confidence in their performance. Skilled DJ’s will use their knowledge to adjust their act and a great music repertoire will certainly them to adjust to the dance floor.
All the above combined will surely equal a highly skilled DJ that will execute a mind-blowing performance and give a guaranteed fantastic party that will set your dancing shoes on fire!
Having been a bride myself, I know how most want the day perfect and we tend to be meticulous to details for the big wedding day. But whist thinking about all these minute details, us brides then go forward and book a DJ for the evening and think “job done” without it even occurring to us what the DJ set up will look like. Why would it? Well, lets face it, most of us don’t really have a clue about which speaker system is what and where it would be best to position those moving heads. All we want is a darn good party where the “kids” can bop away and our granny’s can shake their hips later in the evening. We entrust this to the expert DJ.
Now working for a DJ and Lighting company, I now have a basic understanding of the vastness of quality in DJ set up. Believe me, this varies completely from one end of the spectrum to the other!
Keep the DJ Set Up Simple
It is a wedding after all, not a full blown rave. When I think of a wedding DJ Set Up, I think of a tidy booth with some simple lighting that will produce the desired ambience of romance for first dance and a good family friendly party atmosphere in the evening. For me, less is more. I believe buying into a few pieces with better construction. A colossal 80’s style over-head truss with multiple glaring lights, huge unnecessarily sized speakers and a smoke machine does not scream wedding party to me!
Dreamwave Event’s Evening DJ Set Up includes a choice of booth, discreet speakers, some moving party lighting for the dance floor and an LED wash on the wall behind the DJ in a colour of your choice.
So What does this mean?
The DJ Booth is where the guys work their magic on the decks. Dreamwave offer a choice “look” from the classic star-cloth DJ booth to our signature Decks-on-Show where you can see you DJ mixing live bringing them into the party. Having a vintage themed rustic wedding? We also have our popular rustic styled custom designed pallet booths to match your theme.
The lighting behind the DJ is just a wash of your choice of colour on the wall. The party lighting will shine onto the dance floor. Both are perfect to create the ideal wedding party atmosphere.
Generally a wedding venue seeks to be romantic and welcoming to entice the prospective bride and grooms. The party room is not going to be massive and most will probably look to hold a maximum of 200 people, where some are much smaller. A good wedding DJ will make sure their equipment caters for the venue. They will balance their music volume so that it is loud enough to give a darn good party, but also low enough for guests to enjoy a good natter off the dance floor.
I know of some venues that have sound limiters installed to help control the over zealous DJ. A good DJ will not trip this off. Could you imagine being half way through your favourite song, busting your best moves on the dance floor and then everything suddenly stops as your DJ could not control the music level! Embarrassing for the DJ….and what a way to kill a party!
Don’t let a sound limiter scare you off from your dream wedding venue. As long as your DJ is aware it’s there and know the settings – your evening party will be good to go!
Bright Light, Bright Light!
Lighting is of course a key feature to any party. It is easy for a DJ to get over enthused about party lighting. They have to consider that from the outside looking onto the dance floor, the lighting may look awesome, but as a bride, I really don’t want my family and wedding guests blinded!
Dreamwave used discreet and more then sufficient party lighting and the LED colour wash reflects onto the dance floor to help create that party atmosphere. As mentioned the mood can always be further enhanced with use of suitable lighting and décor.
Cut the Clutter
Be safe not sorry! Us brides don’t want to have to worry about ugly wires and yucky bright extension cords left exposed ruining our once perfect wedding venue! Dreamwave tape down all their wiring and is neat and tidy to avoid hazards and the visual abhorrence.
With Dreamwave’s fantastic and wedding friendly DJ set up, their experience and professionalism has surged them to the top choice of DJ entertainment for weddings in Essex and Suffolk.

When love and skill work together, expect a master piece. This is the way I would describe Emma and Gavin. They made the decision to drop anchor and get hitched on the 10th June 2017 at Hengrave Hall in Suffolk with just 10 months to plan! With Gavin working in Monaco, Emma had her hands full taking the reins organising their special day alongside caring for her two children. Boy, did she do a smashing job! This couple managed to achieve the perfect recipe of razzle dazzle along with romantic family intimacy.
“I considered hiring a wedding planner but I knew that I would want to look back and know that I planned it all myself. Around 4 weeks before the big day, it all suddenly became real! There were lots of last minute changes. With the help of all our amazing suppliers these were all dealt with swiftly! I went to Hengrave the day before the wedding and started to feel more excited as I was so confident in every company we had hired. Waking up at All Saints the morning of the wedding I felt nervous. But upon meeting the amazing Hannah Bibby at Hengrave I immediately felt at ease….she was amazing!”

Why did you choose to have your wedding at Hengrave Hall?
“I found a youtube video (UK’s Top 10 Wedding Venues – Bloomsbury Films) and watched it with my Dad on a rainy Sunday afternoon. As soon as we saw the church in the grounds, I called to enquire. Within literally five minutes of the tour I knew… this is the venue! I compare pulling up to Hengrave with pulling up to the first viewing of our house…..I had exactly the same feeling…..you just know it’s the place for you. I called Gavin once home and after hearing how excited we all were he said if thats where you want to get married then let’s get it booked!”
The ceremony took place in Hengrave’s own chapel found in the charming grounds. The finishing touches provided by Tudor Rose Florist alongside the mesmerising vocals of Revelation Avenue resulted in a truly whimsical setting.
“As I sat during the ceremony listening to Revelation singing so beautifully, looking at all the proud, emotional faces in front of us the feeling was just amazing. We both felt very special. The Long Gallery, Courtyard, West Terrace and of course the Minstrels Gallery all looked perfect….every little element was included and it surpassed our every hope and expectation.”

“People told me that I wouldn’t even notice the decorations/little touches on the day but I noticed everything as it all looked so shiny and new but so tasteful and classy at the same time. I was so busy in the Bridal Suite looking out at the view, watching Safe & Sound entertaining our children, getting ready and laughing with my special ladies that I totally forgot to put in my bridal earrings. After leaving for the church I remembered and got in a panic! Hannah overheard and literally within minutes the earring box was there and I was putting them in…..like MAGIC!”
“My Mum, Sister and my friend Helen and I chose my dress together. I loved all the lace dresses but they seemed to be missing that something extra. So when I saw the Allure gown with it’s beautiful embellishment, my family told me this dress was very much me. That made my mind up! I’m so pleased I chose this dress. Even though I would have liked to be the size I was before having children; I think it suited ,not only me, but also Hengrave and the whole day perfectly!”

“Gavin, Zak & Sam’s wore bespoke made to match suits by Philip Alexander and we couldn’t have been happier…worth every penny! I was very pleased with our choice for the back of the waistcoats as music brings emotion and joy to everyone so the navy and coloured guitars complimented the day perfectly . The Groomsmen also wore Philip Alexander bespoke hire suits. I am so glad that we decided Gavin and the boys should look different to the groomsmen as it is after all as much the Grooms day as it is the brides. Itwas important for him to stand out too and our boys were obviously a huge part of our big day.”

Décor, Sound and Lighting
Emma and Gavin took full advantage of having Dreamwave expertise to hand. From sound production for their Ceremony and Drinks Reception, a complete array of lighting hire throughout the day and a Dreamwave DJ for their evening. This couple had the full Dreamwave Package!
“The decor was simply stunning. I had seen many photos from various sites including your site but they just do not do them justice. The West Terrace and courtyard looked amazing!! The flooring in the Minstrels Gallery looked perfect and just added that something extra without taking away the historical elements of the room. Dreamwave used the template from our wedding invites for the E&G for our gobo design and we used that theme throughout. We saw so many pics on social media of the gobo so were made up it was something everyone wanted to take a picture of. Every little detail I had requested was met and the candles along with a simple floral arrangement next to two picture frames of my Grandparents received so many compliments. I adored the window sills and the gift table, they lit up the venue inside and was exactly what I had requested, not one thing was missed.”

“We had hired Revelation and they made our day so special. However, they did come with lots of extra and last minute organisation including sound equipment and a last minute request for a keyboard! Dreamwave Events really did prove themselves to be a company that go above and beyond as they helped with every single requirement including the last minute keyboard search. The sound, both in the Church and during the drinks reception on the West Terrace was spot on and the choir received so many compliments. That said, you can have the best singers in the world but without the right equipment it wouldn’t have the same impact. Thank you guys!”
“I thought the lighting outside may be a wasted element as it was 10th June so longest days of the year but this was my absolute stand out favourite and even when the sky was still blue but evening had come the lighting looked gorgeous and lit up to show the venue off! One of my favourite photos is of us both walking along with the lights at our sides!”
Why choose Dreamwave Events
“I originally called and booked for DJ services as wasn’t aware of the other services. We were sent the options for Hengrave and fell in love with them all. I took time to meet with all the wedding suppliers but my meeting with Dreamwave stood out the most. The guys were so friendly and patient and went through every single option. I left the meeting feeling extremely confident in your knowledge of the venue and how good it would look.”
“We heard in the Bridal Suite that one of the Dreamwave staff had cut his head whilst setting up. One of my Bridesmaids is a doctor so she went straight down to check he was ok. He politely declined and said he was fine and continued his work! What a true professional! That on top of taking on the task of potentially sourcing a keyboard for our Choir at very short notice so goes to prove what a truly professional and bespoke service you offer. We honestly could not recommend Dreamwaves highly enough. Thank you!”
“I added 2 picture frames with photos of my Grandparents (who were too frail to attend) and both were placed on the piano with some flowers and a candle. Family means so much to me and it looked beautiful. So many of my family members came up and commented on what a lovely touch this was. “

“The framed caricature of the four of us (sketched by the amazing John Roberts) on our gift table was something I first requested immediately after booking the date. I didn’t want photos of the four of us around the venue that everyone had seen 100 times over on social media. But I did include a little framed picture of our boys on one of windows close to the bar as it’s our favourite photo of them both together.”
“We used Angel creations for our Invitations with the E&G emblem and thought it would be nice to continue this throughout. We used the same E&G symbol for all our stable stationary, table plan, Gobo design for the evening, our welcome mirror, ring box and a hanging door accessory.”

“Gavin bought some cigars last minute so I decided to add in the personalised matches which we put in a cognac style vase with a little personalised sign from Mr & Mrs Collins. This went down a storm with all of our guests and two weeks later some cheeky guests were posting pics on social medial of them smoking them in their gardens….but did include the hashtag so we let them off!”
“Although I didn’t see them as was still outside the church I was so proud of our two boys walking down the aisle. Our eldest son Zak is 6 and so he understood what was happening and was so looking forward to it. He was so proud to be Ring bearer (or ringmaster as he told all his friends|)! His face in the church…he was so excited, happy, proud and at the same time a little nervous as he wanted to do his best for his Mummy & Daddy. He made us the proudest parents alive….they both did.”

“The ceremony itself was beautiful. My friend wrote a poem about our long 13 year courtship which included many comical but also heartfelt moments. Lots of tears but also a few good laughs when we both had to state Gavin’s middle name ‘Wesley’ a couple of times during the ceremony. Revelation sung beautifully and I think I will have to ask them to record “over and over again’ (a song they learnt and rehearsed especially for us) as I prefer their version now!”
“The whole day, although a blur was simply the best day of our lives but the most memorable moment was watching the fireworks. Zak & Sam running up in their PJ’s and then holding them both in our arms, just the four of us as the ‘Collins Family’ is a memory we will cherish forever.”
“Darren was our kind of DJ! He was so friendly and people have asked if Gav or me we knew him! I asked for a Justin Bieber song to be played especially for my eldest son Zak. Darren made sure we were all in the room and did a shout out to him put then proceeded to put him in the booth with him and let him be DJ. He stood on a stall so all the guests could see him, wore the headphones, picked the next track over the mic and danced away. He was made to feel like the most important person there and weeks after the wedding and if anybody asks what was his favourite part of the day he says ‘being the DJ'”
“I also asked for a song be played for Gavin as it was his 40th birthday 5 days after the wedding day. I must say every single thing I requested was done but putting my son in the booth just went above and beyond our expectations and made a little 6 year old very happy.”

“Music choices were amazing and he managed to get even the dance shy guests up and boogying. Thank you so much Darren and we hope he enjoyed DJ’ing for us all.”
Advice for Future Bride and Grooms
“Gavin and I do not like to be centre of attention. With my shyness around the camera the whole idea of a ‘big white wedding’ was daunting. Because Gavin has so many friends and I am such a family orientated person we felt we couldn’t just fly away so decided on a wedding in the UK so that everyone could come. I think, without saying it out loud, we booked Revelation Academy, Nick Einhorn the magician and requested a round table apposed to top table so that we would not be ‘centre of attention’! “
“Our advice would be do not spend time worrying about silly stuff like that…..enjoy the planning with family, friends, the stags, hens and all the fuss. You never know you might surprise yourselves and ‘LOVE’ all the fuss on the day just as we did.”
“The day will fly by and you won’t have long with every guest to stand and chat but do take a moment to take it all in. Most of all take time to find your new Husband and tell him how much you love him!”

I love hearing back from our clients. I really feel I get to know some of them and get really involved in their days planning leading up to their wedding or party. But I never get to see the finale (Boo Hoo!). It’s so wonderful to hear from them following their day and we get so many cards, gifts, calls and emails. It really is great to hear that our efforts are appreciated. We genuinly do like to make each individual event special and hearing the feedback is so gratifying and rewarding. I think this shines through in some of our most recent reviews and I would like to share these with you…..
A few Reviews of 2017 so far:
2017’s weddings has bought a whirlwind of busyness our way. We have been so completely inundated with DJ and Lighting requests in Essex, Suffolk and surrounding areas, but as always look to maintain our high expectation of standards. These reviews prove it!
Emma and Gavin had their wedding at Hengrave Hall in June. Their wedding was simply awesome. Actually so much so, that I plan to write a post focused completely on their day. Watch this space! They shared these words:
What a fantastic company! We hired Dreamwave for our wedding at Hengrave Hall on 10th June. The service from our very first call, right up to and including the big day itself was first class. They run a very tight but friendly ship with the help of Carina in the office and their efficient systems. All of this helps make the decision making and booking process very straight forward.
The team went above and beyond for us by helping set up the PA system for our choir in the church and then later on the West Terrace. They also helped trying to source a keyboard to hire just ten days before the big day!
Book these guys…we promise you will not regret it
“We had Paul do our wedding music last Wednesday at Bruisyard hall. Just incredible! So lovely, friendly and approachable. All the music was spot on! Couldn’t have asked for a better DJ! We’ve had so many people asking us how we found you guys and tell us how amazing you were. Thankyou so much for everything!!!!”
“Dreamwave were the perfect choice for light and sound at Hengrave Hall, Bury St Edmunds. They made everything incredibly easy and it all went perfectly. They made the venue look even more spectacular and all our music sounded great. Could not recommend more – they were a dream!”
Michelle and Gary partied the night away in April with our Dreamwave DJ’s at one of my favourite smaller venues, Houchins:
“Dreamwave DJ’d at our wedding on Easter Sunday at Houchins, they were absolutely brilliant! The music, lights and DJ booth were all great and looked fantastic! The DJ even managed to fix the lights on the dancefloor, which wasn’t even theirs. Thanks for a fab night!”
Joanne and Matthew were the victims of yet another awesome evening by our guys. This party rocked!
“A HUGE thanks to Carina for organising our evening and Dave for DJ’ing at our wedding in May – we had the best time! He played all the songs we asked for and had everyone on the dance floor! The party was brilliant & everyone has commented how there was always people dancing away! Everyone loved the music – especially the amazing garage set! A night full of memories that will last forever!”
Lauren and Scott celebrated in style and totally owned the dance floor at the Tudor Barn in Belstead:
I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone at Dreamwave who contributed to making our wedding so awesome! The music on the night was spot on and the dance floor was never empty! It was exactly what we wanted and it was such an important aspect of the day for me so thank you thank you THANK YOU! Here’s a pic to sum up how great it was……

Further to this, it was great to hear from Katie and we were flattered at the invitation to interview. Dreamwave clearly made a fab impression as our DJ’s provided the evening entertainment at her Wedding!
In addition to Katie’s music, in the not too distant future we are providing lighting for Kerrie’s wedding. Kerries awesome Rustic Pallet Backdrop with Hanging Pendent Lamps will be set up at Dedham Vale Vineyard, featured in breath taking Constable Country. In addition to this, the marquee will be decorated with our stunning Hanging Lamps to complete the look.

You have just got married and can now officially change your Facebook status!… It’s now time for the your Drinks Reception. I think most people want their Drinks Reception to be chilled and fun. After all, t’s the first informal part of the wedding day where the wedding party can have a drink and a good natter post ceremony. Guests can take a sip of their prosecco, enjoy their surroundings whilst chilling out to fabulous Drinks Reception Entertainment.
How to choose the perfect Drinks Reception Entertainment to reflect your afternoon vision
What is going to keep your guest engaged whilst the wedding party are off modelling for your perfect wedding shots? Who will be able to play the right style of music your looking for and generate the desired atmosphere?
So, the classic option are Harpists, acoustic guitarists, jazz singers, saxophonists and string quartets. But what if you want Drinks Reception Entertainment that’s a little bit different? Our Cocktail DJ Service offers just that. Have a DJ play your choice of music at suitable background level using a small, discreet and clean set up that wont distract whilst your guests mingle. Your Dreamwave DJ can play anything you choose including Acoustic, Hed Kandi, Blues, Ibiza chilled and Jazz to name a few. I myself like the sound and tempo of acoustic versions of popular songs. Personally, I think the musical flexibility of the Cocktail DJ Service is an absolute gem as it allows you to play any genre you fancy at a reasonable price. You could even up the level further by having him perform alongside a live saxophonist!

Drinks Reception Music on a Budget?
I always wish my purse had free refills! Weddings can certainly prove expensive and not every Bride and Groom can afford live entertainment for the whole day. To me, an obvious saving can be made by putting together your own play list and plug it into either the venue’s PA system or hire one. The disadvantage of this is that you wont have a live entertainer to captivate the Drinks Reception audience. But this is a great option for those on a stricter monetary allocation.
Another option is to look at extending your entertainment from the Wedding Ceremony for a couple of hours. This will most likely prove far cheaper than hiring separate musicians.
Fresh entertainment ideas are hard to find, so we have collaborated with the awesome Sister Sax to create our own DJ and Sax combo.
In this blog post I’m going to tell you about how you can add an element of live music to your party by having a saxophone player to jam along with one of our Dreamwave DJ’s. Our DJ and Sax Combo is highly impressionable to the audience creating a dynamic merger of the artistic talent.
Club Sax Set during your Wedding’s Evening Party
Picture the Scene…
It’s your wedding or party, the dancefloor is packed, you and your guests are going crazy boogying away to your DJ’s great tracks. Then the beat drops and the unmistakable tone of a saxophone can be heard clear and loud over the top of the club classic hit you’ve always loved. Out steps a member of Sister Sax to play along with your DJ live!
Trust me, with one of our DJ’s in the mix playing those club classics the surprise introduction of a sax player jamming alongside each other makes for an insane DJ and Sax Combo! The atmosphere of your party reaches a new level with the ultimate fashionable vibe flowing with natural and contemporary beats.
Our very own DJ Dave Drane says: “Jamming alongside each other is very dynamic and high energy. The atmosphere and reaction of the audience is never forgotten.”
Promo Video of DJ and Sax Combo
We just had to capture this vibe in a short film for you (edited by Spike Grimsey). Using the awesome Hangar at Kesgrave Hall, a perfect party venue to set the scene. We met here with Sister Sax to film with DJ Darren Saxby. I think this speaks more than a thousand words, so here it is……
Drinks Reception DJ and Sax Combo
Do you want a chilled and charismatic atmosphere during your Drinks Reception? The fusion of our Cocktail DJ Service and a saxophone player is the absolute solution. I love the modernistic idea of having a DJ play some smooth Jazz tunes. By adding a saxophone player into the mix, ups the game releasing impressive soulful sounds.
Booking Your DJ Sax Combo
Adding an Ibiza Club Sax Set from Sister Sax to one of our DJ Packages is very easy. We recommend you contact Kay direct to book and discuss the sax performance. Once you have booked a sax player, let us know and we can arrange the logistics of “plugging in” and timing with you and make sure the special collaboration is both flawless and outstanding.

Even I had the opportunity to show my budding DJ skills and gave a cracking performance on the decks; but I think I will be sticking to my desk job for at least the near future!
